Welcome to 8th Grade Math!

I'm looking forward to this school year and have high expectations of success. To achieve this success, communication between us is vital. Please feel free to contact me during school hours by phone or by email. My email address is clong@cameronisd.net.

Eighth Grade Math is not easy and will require a fair amount of time and diligent work. The focus will be on state-mandated objectives called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) which will be our guideline for our new testing criteria, the State of Texas Assessments for Academic Readiness (STAAR), which has replaced the TAKS. Our curriculum will be based on C-Scope criteria along with the Holt 8th Grade Math textbook. Math textbooks will not be issued except upon parent/guardian or student request.

There will be homework almost every night. I completely understand the busy schedules the students will have and will attempt to limit the homework to short assignments, whenever possible.

Here are my class policies for Homework, Test/Evaluations, Class Work, and Grade Calculation:

Homework

1. Students will be required to show all work and strategies. If work is not shown, in student’s own handwriting, it will be considered incorrect.
2. There will be no late work accepted unless following an excused absence. Homework lost or forgotten in locker is considered late.

Test/Evaluations

1. Computation Tests: Tests that review basic computational skills
2. Vocabulary Tests: Tests over mathematical vocabulary words
3. Unit Tests: Tests given at the end of each unit
4. Progress-Monitoring Tests: Tests given at 3-week intervals

Class Work

1. Warm ups: Short math problems to be complete immediately upon entering classroom. Students will have warm ups each and every day.
2. Notes: Students will take class notes in their spirals each day. These spirals will be checked on a daily basis.
3. Class Participation

Grade Calculation

1. Homework: 25% of Six Weeks Grade
2. Class work: 25% of Six Weeks Grade
3. Tests: 50% of Six Weeks Grade
